This is a "hands on" learning experience. Teamwork and cooperation are essential to working the ship. Less experienced people are placed with more experienced crew. You will have a chance to learn anchoring and docking procedures along with sail handling while underway. Ongoing maintenance includes jobs in provisioning, woodworking, steelwork, engineering and rigging. We learn to be the professionals who sail and maintain the ship ourselves.
We do coastal passages and offshore voyages. Sailors of differing levels of experience will have a chance to improve their skills in navigation, watch keeping and sail handling. We have a library of technical books that cover all aspects of Tall Ship sailing, but most importantly it takes hard work, practice and experience in order to master the craft. There is no substitute for experience.
The purpose of ALVEI is to allow her crew to maintain a low cost, self-sufficient lifestyle on the world's oceans, while learning the traditional arts of the sailor. Alvei is not a charter boat or a cruise ship. All maintenance, cooking and sailing is done by her crew who also contribute a low monthly fee to cover food and supplies for the running of the ship.
