Mission to Tikopia cancelled

Our role in the mission to Tikopia has been cancelled. Their plan to start the second or third week in July interfered with our commitment to project MARC on the first of August. Also, because of coming elections in the Solomon Islands, obtaining special permission to visit without first going to Honiara became impossible to organize at this time. We wish David Martin all the best for his mission to Tikopia. If anyone would like to help with this aid project, you may contact David at: galatea_49@yahoo.com

Refit in Nelson

The refit in Nelson is going along well, although we could use some more hands to help out. The main engine has been taken out of the boat and our crankshaft is being repaired in Auckland at the moment. We should have it back within the next week and the reassembly will probably take up the rest of March and the beginning of April. Besides the main engine the crew is working on rigging and general repairs to make Alvei ready for her voyage.

Sailing North and Exploring Fiji

Our plan is to leave in the third week of April to sail to Fiji. This is the best time for you to join us on a deep sea passage to learn the arts of a traditional sailor. After arriving in Suva during the third week of May we can explore the islands to the South and West of Viti Levu. During the first week in June we will set sail from Lautoka (on the west coast of Fiji) to Port Vila, Vanuatu.

Boat-building and Exploring Vanuatu’s Remote Islands

Now we have a chance to start early with our aid in Vanuatu. A sailing school is being built in Sakao to teach niVans the art of catamaran boatbuilding, navigation and sailing. It has been suggested that Alvei takes part in helping establish this new school. We will transport small boats, parts, supplies and team mates. Besides being involved with the boat and facilities building it was also suggested to take niVan students for sail training. We will also be visiting some of the remote Vanuatu Islands such as Abrym, Pentocost or Bali Hai. You can join us in Port Vila, Vanuatu in mid June to participate in this project. We will post more details as soon as we will have organized and worked out places, schedules and times.

Project MARC – (Medical Aid to Remote Communities)

As mentioned earlier, Project MARC has been working in Vanuatu for the past 4 years. They have been assessing the medical needs of the outer islands, establishing clinics and providing limited treatment in numerous locations. This season MARC will convert Alvei’s galley into an operating room for eye surgery. We will assist MARC with their project and sail to different locations and clinics in Vanuatu as outlined in our itinerary. MARC’s website is: www.terrawatch.org

Sailing to Australia

After we finish with project MARC in Vanuatu we will sail to Australia. People wishing to experience a deep see voyage can join us for the three-week passage to Brisbane, Australia. You can learn to sail our schooner, stand watches, navigate, share ship’s duties and have a lot of fun. You may receive the documentation for your sea-time.

C0-0p Fees and available Crew Positions on Alvei

Fees during the sailing season are $800 USD per month or $26.66 USD per day. At the time of writing, in mid March, we have 4 openings for the passage to Fiji and 3 for Vanuatu’s remote Islands and the sailing school. There is one opening left on Project MARC and there are now 8 openings for the passage to Australia in November.
